Shark Bay Scuba at Seaworld

10 May 2008

Today was the day that Shane and I had promised ourselves since we started Scuba Diving in 2004. We were going to do the Shark Scuba at Seaworld on the Gold Coast. So Shane, Rene, Nicky, Russell, Ronald and I headed down.

When we arrived at Seaworld just after 10AM, Shane and I checked into Animal Adventures. Russell decided to join us as there were 4 dive spots available. Cool.. The three divers on the day diving together.

Checking in complete, we headed off to wander around the park for a while. First up, as always, Rene wanted Ice Cream. Sweets in all hands, we headed to Shark Bay

to pat and stroke the starfish and sea cucumbers in the touch pool. I was proud of Nicky as she has told me that she is scared of fish, even the thought of them can frighten her.

But, boldly, Nicky overcame that fear by stroking one of the starfish in the pond. Go girl!

I was playing around with the macro setting on my Pentax istD L SLR. I was about 15cm away from this cute little fella. I should get a macro lens..

We went into the Shark Bay underwater observatory where you can see the marine life up close. I took about 100 photos in here, but these are the a couple of the better ones.

Small Hammerhead shark, "Hammie" as Nicky came to call him, only about 3 feet long. This dude was in the tank that we were going to dive in. Do you think I could find him while I was in the tank? No way!

It seems the rays in the tanks are just posers.. They come right up to the glass and pose for you.

To put the general public at ease, Seaworld have erected a sign which is hoped to quell some of the fear of sharks.

It all got a bit to much for Ronald, all that walking around, it can wear a man out!

I decided we should all jump on the Merry Go Round just for the hell of it, like a family affair.. But Ronald had just bought another Ice Cream and could not get on, so we left him there throwing a tanty..

Remind you of anything Nicky??

Rene conned Nicky to go on this ride. You pull down on the rope and the car rises to the top. No idea what the ride is called.

Russell and Shane checking out the scenery. Russell putting on his best "Hmm.. Interesting point that" look and Shane looking at the camera thinking "What the hell?"

At 3:35, it was time to meet up with the others for the dive. We had our briefing and headed to the pool.

I was so eager to get in the water.

There were 6 divers, 3 guys and 3 girls. Not so many that we would butt heads, nice :) Nicky had a crash course in using my camera to get photos of us above and below.

Part of the reef in the tank.

Cruising along with not a care in the world.. "Now where is Hammie"?

Russell and I viewing the larger sharks in the other tank. There is a large window where you can see into the other tank.

Shane and I drifting around. We were requested to keep our hands as close to our bodies, usually clasped as Shane has done here.

Shane had just banged into me so Russell decided to pull my fin.

The Boys.. Even though the dive was only about 2 to 3 meters and we had 23 minutes in the tank, it was a very good dive. I can recommend this to any diver as an easy shallow dive with no risk of complications.

At the end of the dive, all the divers sat at the entrance point discussing the dive. Can someone get Russell a pillow?

All happy now.. I wanted to get back in, I only used 1/4 of the air in my tank!

OK, now for the downside of this page.. Those brave enough, scroll down.. WAY down.. BUT BE WARNED!!!
